Trip Overview
Where: Natchez, Mississippi
Who: Sarah & Michael
Best For: Couples, history lovers, weekend getaways
Best Time to Visit: Spring Pilgrimage, Fall Pilgrimage, Balloon Festival, Christmas
Before we had Frankie, Michael and I loved taking weekend trips together, and Natchez was one of our favorite destinations. It’s close enough for an easy getaway from South Louisiana but feels like a completely different pace of life.
Whether you’re interested in historic homes, great food, river views, or simply slowing down for a weekend, Natchez is an easy place to relax and reconnect. You don’t need a packed itinerary here. Some of our favorite parts of visiting have been wandering downtown, touring historic homes, enjoying a nice dinner, and taking in the Mississippi River views.
If you’re looking for a couples getaway that feels special without requiring a long trip, Natchez is one of our favorites.

When to Visit Natchez as a Couple
Natchez is charming year-round, but there are a few times of year when the city really comes alive. Each offers a slightly different experience, so the best time to visit depends on what kind of weekend you’re looking for.
Spring & Fall Pilgrimage
Our very first visit was during the Spring Pilgrimage after a recommendation from a friend, and it’s still our favorite time to visit.
Natchez hosts two Pilgrimages each year: one in the spring and one in the fall. During these events, many privately owned historic homes open their doors for guided tours.
Along with the year-round museum homes, there are special events, demonstrations, and opportunities to experience parts of Natchez that aren’t normally open to the public.
If this is your first trip to Natchez, I’d highly recommend planning around a Pilgrimage. It’s a great excuse to spend a couple of days exploring the city together, and the historic homes are the highlight.
Natchez Balloon Festival
We’ve also visited during the Natchez Balloon Festival, which gives the city a completely different atmosphere.
The festival features live music, food vendors, evening balloon glows, and morning hot air balloon launches. Watching dozens of colorful balloons rise over the Mississippi River is something you won’t forget.
If you’re looking for a more unique couples weekend, the Balloon Festival would be a fun time to visit.

Christmas in Natchez
For a cozy holiday getaway, Natchez is especially beautiful at Christmas.
Downtown is decorated for the holidays, including a large Christmas tree in the heart of town, and many of the historic homes are beautifully decorated for seasonal tours.
One of our favorite experiences was touring The Towers during its Jeweled Christmas event. The home is stunning on its own, and the holiday decorations and jewelry collection make it even more memorable.
How to Spend a Couple’s Weekend in Natchez
One of the things we love about Natchez is that you don’t have to rush. It’s a destination where you can spend the morning touring historic homes, take your time over lunch, wander through downtown, and end the day with dinner and a river view.
Here are some of our favorite things to do together.
Start at the Natchez Visitor Center
We always begin our visits at the Natchez Visitor Center. It’s a good place to pick up maps, learn about current events, and purchase tickets for historic home tours.
If you’re visiting during a Pilgrimage or another special event, this is also a good first stop for getting oriented and finding out what’s happening around town.
Tour the Historic Homes
The biggest draw to Natchez is its incredible collection of historic homes.
Several museum homes are open year-round, including the famous octagonal Longwood Mansion, while many additional private homes participate during the Spring and Fall Pilgrimages.

Even if you’re not a history buff, the craftsmanship is fascinating. I love hearing how the homes were built, learning about the original materials, and seeing the period furnishings.
One detail that always stands out to me is the beautiful reproduction wallpaper at Stanton Hall. I even tried to find an affordable version to put in our own home, but no luck!
Another stop worth making is the Linden Historic Bed & Breakfast. Its hand-carved front doors, created around 1818, are believed to have inspired the famous entrance to Tara in Gone with the Wind.

Don’t feel like you need to tour every home. Pick a few that interest you and leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the city.
Wander Downtown Natchez
Downtown Natchez is filled with locally owned shops, antique stores, restaurants, and beautiful historic buildings.
It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon browsing and wandering at your own pace. This is one of those parts of the trip where I wouldn’t over-plan. Give yourself time to pop into shops, stop for a drink or snack, and simply enjoy being in a historic downtown together.
Walk Along the Mississippi River
One of our favorite ways to end the day is with a walk through Bluff Park overlooking the Mississippi River.
It’s a peaceful place to watch barges and riverboats pass while enjoying the view. It’s also an easy way to slow down after a day of sightseeing.

Take a Carriage Ride
For an even more historic experience, consider taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through downtown Natchez.
It’s a relaxing way to learn about the city’s history while seeing many of its beautiful homes. If you’re looking for something a little more memorable than simply walking around downtown, this is a fun addition to a couples weekend.

A Sample Couple’s Weekend in Natchez
You could easily spend more than a weekend in Natchez, but two nights gives you enough time to experience the city without feeling rushed.
Here’s how we’d structure a weekend:
Friday
- Arrive and check in
- Explore downtown
- Dinner
- Evening river walk
Saturday
- Breakfast
- Historic home tours
- Lunch and downtown shopping
- Bluff Park
- Dinner at a historic property
Sunday
- Breakfast
Head home
The best part? You don’t have to follow this itinerary exactly. Natchez is one of those places where leaving some room in your schedule makes the trip better.
Where to Eat on a Couple’s Trip to Natchez
We’ve had great meals throughout Natchez, but these are some of our favorites:
- Fat Mama’s Tamales — A Natchez classic that’s famous for its tamales and laid-back atmosphere.
- Pearl Street Pasta — Our favorite restaurant in town. If you go, order the salmon salad.
- Restaurant 1818 at Monmouth Historic Inn — A great choice for a nicer dinner in a beautiful historic setting.
- The Castle Restaurant at Dunleith Historic Inn — Another excellent option if you’re looking for a more upscale meal.

For a couples trip, I’d mix it up. Have a casual lunch one day, then make dinner one of your experiences. Natchez has several historic properties that make dinner feel like part of the trip rather than simply another meal.
Where to Stay in Natchez
Where you stay can be part of the experience in Natchez.
If you want to stay downtown, the Natchez Grand Hotel sits right on the Mississippi River and makes a convenient home base for exploring the city.
For an even more memorable experience, consider staying at one of the historic bed and breakfasts. We stayed at Greenlea Bed & Breakfast, and it was a wonderful way to experience one of Natchez’s historic homes firsthand.

And while you’re in town, don’t skip breakfast. Natchez proudly calls itself the Biscuit Capital of the World, making biscuits and gravy an easy recommendation.
Things to Know Before Your Natchez Getaway
- Many restaurants, shops, and attractions are closed on Sundays, so plan your itinerary accordingly.
- Two nights is the perfect amount of time to experience the city without feeling rushed.
- If you’re interested in historic homes, check the Pilgrimage dates before booking your trip.
- Comfortable walking shoes are a must since much of downtown is best explored on foot.
- Don’t over-schedule your weekend. One of the best things about Natchez is having time to wander, sit down for a meal, and enjoy the city at a slower pace.

Final Thoughts
Natchez is the kind of destination that reminds you that a weekend getaway doesn’t have to be packed with activities to be memorable.
Before we had Frankie, some of our favorite weekends together were spent exploring places like Natchez, walking through historic neighborhoods, touring beautiful homes, trying new restaurants, and simply enjoying being somewhere different together.
Between the incredible historic homes, charming downtown, delicious food, and scenic Mississippi River views, Natchez makes an easy and memorable couples getaway from South Louisiana.
Whether you visit during Pilgrimage season, the Balloon Festival, or the Christmas holidays, it’s a place we’ve enjoyed returning to again and again, and one we’d happily recommend for a weekend away together.
