Day Trips: Mississippi Children’s Museum: Visiting Jackson, MS with a Toddler

If you’re looking for an easy family day trip from South Louisiana, the Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson, Mississippi is worth adding to your list.

A friend recommended the museum to us and mentioned there was also an incredible playground right outside. With Jackson only about two hours from our house, it seemed like the perfect destination for a quick adventure with our three-year-old, Frankie.

Trip Overview

Date: October 9, 2025
Who: Me, Michael and Frankie
Where: Mississippi Children’s Museum, Jackson, Mississippi

We left home around 7:00 a.m. and arrived just as the museum opened at 9:00 a.m. After hearing so many good things about it, we were excited to see if it lived up to the hype.

Exploring the Mississippi Children’s Museum

The moment we walked in, I was impressed. The museum spans three floors, and the colorful design immediately feels welcoming and engaging for children.

There are several hands-on exhibits throughout the museum, including Exploring Mississippi, World at Work, The Enchanted Land of Story, Wild About Reading, and Healthy Fun.

One of our favorite areas was the Exploring Mississippi exhibit. Kids can interact with a miniature version of the Mississippi River by catching catfish, building bridges, and learning about the state’s waterways through play.

The World at Work exhibit was another big hit. Children can race vehicles down ramps, test which ones move faster, and experiment with basic STEM concepts. Frankie’s favorite feature was a robot with a dance mode that kept her entertained for quite a while.

We also enjoyed spending time outside in The Enchanted Land of Story, where kids can play musical instruments, climb a tall tower, and explore imaginative play spaces.

Xylophone in The Enchanted Garden

Back inside, there were even more opportunities for climbing and discovery. In the Healthy Fun exhibit, kids can crawl through a giant digestive system while learning how the body works. It was both educational and fun.

We spent several hours exploring and still felt like there was more to see.

LeFleur’s Bluff Playground

Right outside the museum is LeFleur’s Bluff Playground, and it is easily one of the coolest playgrounds we’ve visited.

The playground features massive climbing structures, slides, swings, merry-go-rounds, and dedicated areas for younger children. You could easily spend an hour or more here after visiting the museum.

LeFleur's Bluff Playground

One of the highlights of the day was watching Frankie climb through the tunnels and platforms to reach the tallest slide. We were so proud of her confidence and determination.

If you’re visiting the Mississippi Children’s Museum, make sure to leave time for the playground.

Lunch at Pig & Pint

After all that climbing and exploring, we were ready for lunch.

We headed to Pig & Pint, a popular barbecue restaurant in Jackson. We ordered a three-meat sampler with several sides, which was plenty for the three of us to share.

The food was excellent, and Frankie happily enjoyed some barbecue and macaroni and cheese. It was the perfect way to end our adventure before heading home.

Final Thoughts

Our day trip to the Mississippi Children’s Museum exceeded expectations.

The museum offers a great mix of hands-on learning, imaginative play, and physical activity, making it an excellent destination for toddlers and young children. Combined with LeFleur’s Bluff Playground, it easily filled an entire morning of fun.
